Why we do what we do...

We don't grow into creativity, we grow out of it. Or rather we get educated out of it. All kids have tremendous talent and yet we squander their talents away pretty ruthlessly. Academic ability has come to dominate our view of intelligence because the Universities designed the system in their image. The consequence is that many highly talented, brilliant, creative people think that they are not because the thing that they were good at in school wasn't valued or was actually stigmatized. -Ken Robinson in his TEDtalk "Schools Kill Creativity"

In the next 25 years more people worldwide will be graduating through education since the beginning of history. Suddenly college degrees aren't worth much. The phenomonon called the Flynn Effect proves that IQ scores increase about 10 points with each generation. Kyung Hee Kim at the College of William & Mary discovered this past May, after analyzing almost 300,000 Torrence's Tests (an in depth, worldwide adminstered test) that creativity had been steadily rising at about the same rate, just like IQ scores...until 1990. Since then creativity scores have consistently inched downward. "It's very clear, and the decrease is very significant," Kim says. It is the scores of younger children - from K-6th grade - for whom the decline is "most serious."

Newsweek states, "All around us are matters of national and international importance that are crying out for creative solutions, from saving the Gulf of Mexico to bringing peace to Afghanistan to delivering heath care. Such solutions emerge from a healthy marketplace of ideas, sustained by a populace consistently contributing original ideas and receptive to the ideas of others." Additionally, a recent IBM poll of 1,500 CEO's identified creativity as the No. 1 "leadership competency" of the future.

Yes, art is fun. Yes, every child should have the opportunity to play around with art while they are young. However, Bonfet Academy's mission is greater than "just for fun." OUR MISSION is to reveal to children the talent that they possess; foster that talent while teaching them about people who accomplished great things throughout history by using art; and to restore value in creativity to a generation who will be - in any field they choose, valued for their creativity.
